Student Guide: Starting Your Own Business Project

Goal

Create a small business idea and prepare to host a game, craft, activity and/or sell a product or service. You will:

  • Write a business plan
  • Design a logo/brand
  • Apply to become a vendor booth
  • Practice sales, marketing, and communication skills

PART 1: Create a Business Plan (Your Roadmap)

A business plan is a written guide for your business idea—it explains what you’re selling, who will buy it, and how you’ll make money

Step-by-Step

1. Business Idea

  • What are you selling?
  • Why would people want it?

2. Target Customers

  • Who will buy your product? (age, interests, needs)

3. Unique Selling Point (USP)

  • What makes your product different or better?

4. Pricing

  • How much will you charge?
  • Will you make a profit?

5. Marketing Plan

  • How will people find out about your business?

6. Basic Costs & Profit

  • What materials do you need?
  • How much will you earn?

Most business plans include sections like summary, product/service, marketing, and financial plan

  1. Choose a business name
  2. Pick colors and fonts
  3. Design a simple logo
  4. Make sure it matches your product

Tips

  • Keep it simple and easy to read
  • Use 2–3 colors max
  • Make it memorable

PART 3: Design Your Vendor Booth

Your booth is your mini store setup.

What to Include

  • Table covering (matches your brand colors)
  • Product display (neat and organized)
  • Sign with your business name & prices
  • Decorations to attract attention

Tips

  • Make your booth eye-catching
  • Keep it clean and uncluttered
  • Make pricing easy to see

PART 4: Sales & Marketing Skills

Marketing (Getting Attention)

  • Posters or flyers
  • Social media (if allowed)
  • Word of mouth (tell friends!)

Understanding your market and customers is key to success

Sales Skills (Closing the Deal)

  • Smile and greet customers
  • Explain your product clearly
  • Be polite and confident

Example Script:

“Hi! Would you like to check out our ___? It’s great because ___.”

PART 5: Communication Skills

Good Communication Looks Like:

  • Eye contact
  • Clear speaking
  • Listening to customers
  • Answering questions politely

Avoid:

  • Ignoring customers
  • Talking too quietly
  • Being rude or distracted
